About this bottle

This limited edition single barrel release, WhistlePig 6 Year PiggyBack Rye Legends Series: Big Papi, is part of WhistlePig's core WhistlePig 6 Year PiggyBack Rye whiskey. The Legends Series honors notable figures, and this bottling celebrates Boston Red Sox icon David Ortiz, also known as Big Papi. To mark his 2022 induction into Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame, the whiskey is finished in barrels that previously held Ortiz’s signature DO34 maple wood bats.

Carlos Spear 4.0

A potent rye conclusion reminiscent of spearmint and double mint. Quite delicate and ethereal. It carries a subtle leather aroma. A mild rye presence accompanies that spearmint finish. While I haven't tried the standard Piggyback, I suspect the barrel aging imparts that leathery wood characteristic. My current tasting impressions are quite new. Larger sips result in more pronounced rye spice and warmth.

Reese Fitzpatrick 4.3

Perhaps my perspective is influenced by being from Boston, but I found this enjoyable. I favored its sharpness in an Old Fashioned over drinking it neat, noting primarily spice, caramel, and faint vanilla notes. It possesses a subtle complexity if you take the time to appreciate it. Certainly a novelty, but I liked it.

For the price, just get a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Save $20. It's okay for what it is, but not exceptional. Good honey notes.

Jill Francis 3.5

Mostly grain on the nose, with a touch of syrup. The taste is clean and warm. A dependable, straightforward rye.

It's surprising how much maple flavor I can detect. This has made me a fan of this brand.
