This herbal liqueur originates from a formula created by József Zwack, the Royal Physician to the Habsburg Court for Emperor Joseph II in 1790. J. Zwack & Co. has been marketing it since the 1840s, and it is now produced by descendants of the Zwack family after various interruptions. It is a combination of over 40 botanicals, with some introduced during distillation and others macerated, and it ages in oak for six months. Caramel coloring is added prior to bottling at 40% ABV.

I detect notes of pine needles, echinacea, anise, (very) dark chocolate, bitter espresso, and a deep, almost illicit sweetness, perhaps from (burnt) orange peel. It begins quite intensely and overpoweringly, but continued tasting allows the palate to adjust, and the flavors start to emerge. Overall, it's rather bitter and not for the timid. However, if given an opportunity, it offers considerable depth.
The aroma is very similar to Jägermeister. The taste is also similar but less sweet and much more bitter. The bitterness is comparable to Gammeldansk or perhaps Fernet Branca without the mint. It coats the back of your mouth and lingers for a long time. There are also some sweeter notes of orange peel present.
Very bitter, very herbaceous. Good for digestion. I'm not usually a fan of bitter things, but I'll happily drink this if the opportunity arises.
Smells quite similar to Jaegermeister, but with different herbs. It's spicier, with a bitter aftertaste.
An additional five percent alcohol would have made a significant difference.
A bitter taste, comparable to Amaro but lacking the sweet, minty flavor.
