I've had mixed experiences with finished whiskeys; some are fantastic, while others fall a bit flat. TC Whiskey is a local establishment, so I'm optimistic about this one. The aroma is mildly sweet, with definite fruitiness and a classic whiskey foundation, though the ethanol is a bit strong on the nose. The initial taste is fairly gentle. The port finish is quite prominent and leads the flavor. A few subtle brown sugar notes emerge, followed by a more traditional cinnamon warmth in the finish. The warmth is rather mild, however, and fades quickly. Overall, it's neither a favorite nor a dislike. It's a pleasant pour that deviates from the standard dram and goes down smoothly. The barrel proof version costs twice as much, but I'm curious to sample it.....

Another drink from TCW, this time their straight bourbon whiskey that's been finished in port wine casks. The alcohol scent is noticeable right after pouring, so I allowed it to aerate for a few minutes before taking my first genuine smell. The aroma is predictably strong with port, supported by corn, raisins, caramel, and dried fruit. The flavors noted in the aroma carry through to the palate and are enhanced by a gentle, pleasing spice in the swallow. The texture is somewhat thin and dry, with a finish that is brief but sufficient to leave you wanting more. For the Traverse City team, smoothness is key. While the flavors and sensations are distinctly bourbon, the overall experience is pure Michigan.

Shayne Ruelas 3.0

Aroma: subtle wine, subtle vanilla, subtle orange Body: moderate Taste: port wine, mandarin orange, subtle vanilla Finish: lingering vanilla, moderate to short Comment: I agree with a friend, it's smoother than the cherry version. I don't prefer it as much as the cherry. It's acceptable.

Salvatore Olguin 3.8

Smells like orange cream but the palate is empty. It has butter, vanilla, rye spice, and perhaps oat. The finish is dry.

Cierra Barrow 3.0

It's good. Lingering floral notes on the finish. The palate and aroma are fantastic.

Rene Way 3.8

A substantial port aroma. Rich.
