Balblair 1983 1st Release

I have no recollection of what I was doing in 1983 at six years old, but I doubt I was contemplating the casks used for this or even whiskey itself. I recall the beginning of my Balblair exploration. Initially, I didn't grasp the excitement surrounding some of their younger releases, but then I tried the 1999 second release and was genuinely impressed. My expectations were high, and this certainly met them. Delightful caramel, honey, toffee, and a spicy woody bitterness, which, surprisingly, I found appealing this time, blending beautifully with the rest of the whiskey. A few drops of water and some patience allowed the slight bitterness to recede, bringing everything together flawlessly. I suspect that working through a bottle might elevate this score, perhaps to a 4.5, which the 1999 second release might also deserve as a better representation of their quality, but I'll maintain a cautious rating.

This is amazing! Distilled in 1983 and bottled in 2015, this is approximately 32 years old. The aroma is tropical, with notes of pineapple, coconut, toffee, and fresh blossoms, alongside hints of baking spices. The taste is extraordinary. I detect rich butterscotch, warm caramel, smooth mango, bright white grapes, and spiced nuts. The finish is enduring, smooth, and perfectly harmonious. Lingering tastes of toffee and milk chocolate, reminiscent of a Heath Bar, along with pleasant wood notes. This is beautiful! Seek it out while you still can.

I instantly adored this whiskey. Contrary to the distiller's assessment of Highland Park 18 Year, Amanda Schuster's score of 97 is accurate. It's also noteworthy that Serge from Whiskey Fun gives it a 90, and he's quite critical! Nose: vanilla, pears, apple Palate: creamy, rich, with a perfect touch of sweetness, almonds, hazelnuts Finish: toffee! Luxurious body, warmth, no harshness, a very long finish. At 46% ABV, it's perfectly balanced – no water, ice, or anything else needed:) Luxurious and elegant – I doubt this is easily obtainable, sadly. Hud

The most authentic expression of American bourbon cask whisky. Very sweet and fruity on both the nose and palate. The finish is creamy, woody, smooth, and clean. It reminds me of the Glen Grant 23yr from The First Edition. For a 32-year-old whisky, this is an excellent value. Splendid whiskey!

The flavor is quite unpleasant.
