The Whistler Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish

This is officially called The Whistler Oloros Sherry Cask Blend, not just "The Whistler." While I'd usually say I plan to review their other offerings, those bottles disappear quickly after purchase. However, if another 7-year Cask Strength becomes available, I'll definitely buy a case. This is their non-age-statement expression, likely around 3 years old considering they have a 5-year. It's bottled at 43% ABV. Despite the name, it's a blend of bourbon and sherry, which is a bit misleading. Their marketing is irksome, but the cork, featuring musical notes, is really cool. Nose: Exhibits cereal grain, vanilla, and sherry nuances. Many common fruit notes are present, unaffected by oak or bitterness, unlike some single malts. If there's apple, it tastes like pure apple. A salty sensation is detected, not like sea air, but likely from the oak. Taste: Again, grain elements are apparent, resembling vanilla ice cream with a touch of minerality. Savory fruit notes are also present, possibly like a sweeter coconut. Some icing notes are detected. Malt character is absent, and the sherry influence is minimal, with citrus and fruity notes dominating instead. Overall, this is a delightful and very affordable Irish whiskey. For around $35, it can be blended, mixed with coke, or enjoyed neat. Its value is remarkable. However, the 43% alcohol content feels a bit high, and the mineral note is not ideal. The finish lacks distinction and progression. I'm giving it 2 stars, which feels quite generous. If you see this, I highly recommend trying it.

Boann Distillery produces the Whistler line of whiskies. With their deep expertise and innovative spirit, they've crafted some excellent Irish whiskies accessible to all. Boann is the name of an Irish goddess associated with the River Boyne in Leinster, Ireland. Boann Distillery sources 100% of its grain locally and uses only natural ingredients. It's a family-owned operation run by Patrick and Marie Cooney. Led by Michael Walsh, the youngest Master Distiller in Ireland at 29 years old, Boann Distillery has significantly contributed to the resurgence of Ireland's whiskey industry. The Whistler Oloroso Cask Finish consists of whiskies that have undergone triple distillation and were matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in ex-oloroso casks. This expression from The Whistler range is bottled at 43% ABV and is non-chill filtered. Appearance: Yellow Gold The aroma is quite intense, revealing notes of raspberry cobbler, peaches, honeysuckle, sherry, and a subtle butterscotch sweetness. The palate is smooth and velvety, featuring flavors of ginger, sherry, honey, dried fruits, and some oak tannins. The finish is extended, with increasing spice alongside hints of leather and lingering sherry.

The Whistler is making waves lately in Irish whiskey. Everything I've tasted from them is quite good, even for someone like me who isn't the biggest fan of Irish whiskies. This is an Oloroso cask finished version, featuring an attractive label, typical of The Whistler bottles. It's bottled at 43% ABV. On the nose, I detect honey, apples, hazelnut, cooked apples, and a spongy cake. There are also notes of cupcakes and sawdust. On the palate, it mirrors the nose. Honey and apples. Quite enjoyable and cake-like. The finish is grassy with a slight saltiness. It's very light and satisfying, with some tobacco notes present. Overall, a very standard dram that's enjoyable for its reasonable price. I don't really sense the Oloroso influence, but it's certainly very fruity. My rating is 81 out of 100.

The whiskey is quite dry, and the minerality isn't remarkable. I found it improved significantly after letting it rest for 20 minutes before tasting. This whiskey lacks complexity as many intriguing tasting notes are muted, but I acquired it at a greatly reduced price since a local shop was clearing it out. I truly appreciate the integrity bottling of this whiskey.

Sweet and mellow. I'd want to include this in my collection. I can picture it complementing a platter of rich cheeses and nuts.
