Scottish Leader Original

My search for a decent, inexpensive scotch blend led me to Scottish Leader. Given that Deanston and Bunnahabhain are two of my preferred single malt distillers, I had hopes that some quality had made it into this cheap blend (I paid $15). Poured neat, it looks acceptable in the glass. The nose is reminiscent of JW Black, with honey, lemon, and a cough drop scent. There's some light smoke, maltiness, and a bit of body. The palate begins nicely with smoky honey, malt, and some wood. However, the grain alcohol then takes over with bitterness, and the honey note transforms into something more like corn syrup. The finish lasts but becomes bitter and dry. Adding water significantly improves it, reducing the overly bitter notes and smoothing out the grain alcohol bite, while also enhancing the mouthfeel and finish. It's not too bad for the price... a blend score of 65/100... it works adequately as a mixer, but I wouldn't buy it again. I believe the only truly good blends are those with age statements or vatted malts. I'll stick to bourbon in this price range.

The aroma presents vanilla, nutmeg, and grain, followed by a taste of caramel, baking spices, charred oak, and a zesty conclusion with notes of licorice and faint smoke. It's quite warm for 80 proof; adding a bit of water or an ice cube is highly advised. Considering the cost, I find Grants or Red Label, for a little more money, to be more appealing.
