The aroma nicely balances sweetness and spice. Vanilla, dark cherry, and toasted marshmallow are most prominent, but hints of leather, oak, wood polish, and cinnamon add depth to the overall scent. Cherry, caramel, and vanilla appear first, followed by a woody smoke character. The smoke then gives way to sweeter notes and toasted grains. Smooth, but it lacks richness, and the ending is just adequate. It fades relatively quickly, but leaves a pleasant, subtle trace of vanilla and oak on the palate. I have to admit, I've been curious to try this since I first heard about it. Primarily because I'm from Houston. All I can say is I'm pleased I enjoyed it!

About this bottle
Sam Houston 12 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon is produced from a mash bill rich in rye and matured for 12 years in new American white oak barrels with a #4 char level. The Bardstown Bourbon Co. team handpicked the barrels, with only three chosen for each batch, and each state receiving a unique batch. The inaugural release was distributed to just two states: Texas and Tennessee, both of which Sam Houston previously served as governor.
