Russell's Reserve 1998

This product teeters precariously on the edge between being too much and being just right. A rich aroma, though a bit potent, of deep maple syrup, a generous amount of cinnamon, and dried cherries. The taste is rather strong and improves with a small addition of water. Red apples, leather, nutmeg, and dry cedar are present. The conclusion arrives in two stages. Initially, it's quite bitter and dry due to its significant age. However, this fades, and the spice and heat emerge, creating a sensation akin to red chilies. This is a fine, unconventional bourbon. With a bit more moderation and focus, it would be truly remarkable.

Certainly more peppery than sweet. I can appreciate it, but it's not a top choice. I prefer more oak, and it doesn't really stand out. Second Tasting: I'm detecting the sweetness now. It's a deep sweetness with some woodsy character and dried fruits. I believe I'm beginning to love it. Fortunate to sample from a friend's bottle and still keep my own unopened. Still can't fathom why my review is the only one here. Has no one else really experienced it? I'm trading away my bottle. Found an exchange I couldn't refuse. I'm getting a George T. Stagg 2013!!!

A very nice nose, subtle yet spicy. A peppery sensation in the mouth, but surprisingly smooth when swallowed. Drink it neat and allow it to rest for a moment to open up.

My current top pick. It's perfectly balanced and has everything. Banana, spice, vanilla, cinnamon, and heat.

Had a smoky and spicy profile. From Doc Crow's in Louisville, KY. I did not enjoy it.
