Ron del Barrilito Three Stars

I discovered this rum during my initial trip to Puerto Rico, which led to many subsequent visits. It's a fantastic representation of what Puerto Rican rum can be. As I understand it, the family doesn't distill the rum themselves but instead personally selects a blend of Bacardi's finest and ages them according to their own standards. It's light and sweet, yet possesses enough body for its complexities to stand out. There's a spiciness (allspice, cinnamon) present that enhances some woodier notes, leaving a relatively dry finish with a hint of warmth. I usually enjoy this neat, but it also makes a superb cuba libre. I make sure to buy at least 3 bottles whenever I travel there, as this rum is quite hard to find in my region (Philly). While on the island, you can easily pick up a bottle at the local Walgreens for around $20. The island and this rum hold a special place in my heart.

I first tasted this artisanal rum when I was a student in Puerto Rico in the spring of 1984. It was also the first time I had ever tried a sipping rum, and I was amazed at how good it could be. The Puerto Ricans are rightly proud of this, which completely outshines Bacardi. Exceptionally smooth initially with caramel, toffee, tobacco, and oak. Sweetness is just right. A bit earthy toward the finish, which makes me want more.

It's sweet and glides down smoothly. Regardless of it being a Bacardi blend, their finishing technique is absolutely outstanding! This is one of my preferred sipping rums. I detect notes of orange peel, wood, and sugarcane. Personally, I don't find it spicy, perhaps just a touch in a way that's well-integrated, not overwhelming. This marks my third purchase, and it will certainly not be my last.

Sweet, sugary, caramel-like and delicious. It's difficult to find fault here; further sips reveal molasses, cinnamon, and very faint tangy fruit notes, with just enough warmth to remind you to take it slow. The barrel contributes complexity and flavor, and the final product is excellent. I'm happy this doesn't require a trip to PR to enjoy anymore.

A relative brought me a bottle from Puerto Rico after I'd heard positive remarks. This isn't your standard spiced or flavored rum. It has a powerful flavor, but I can't identify it precisely. Perhaps something akin to licorice? Regardless, it's not what I had in mind.

Yes. This is the Spanish-style rum I was seeking. It surpasses Don Q Gran Anejo for me and is the finest Puerto Rican rum I've encountered up to this point. Don't be deceived by the unpretentious bottle; it's enjoyable for sipping.
