Red River Texas Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Pinot Noir Casks

This Bourbon is quite scarce west of the Mississippi. During the same business trip where I found W.L. Weller, I also located a bottle of this. It's finished in Pinot Noir wine barrels, leading to certain taste expectations. As often happens, expectations don't always align with reality, and I admit my mistake in sampling it after other Bourbons. My father and I tried this following W. L. Weller 12 yo and Angel's Envy. Both of those Bourbons are exceptionally smooth and mellow, with flavors that transition gently across the palate without haste. Red River is entirely different. The taste erupts on your palate like a firecracker, revealing notes of wood, wine aromas, some spice, and a touch of sweetness. I waited several weeks before trying it again, and the flavors remained, but were much more agreeable. This is a powerful Bourbon and should be approached accordingly. I enjoy it on ice or with a small amount of water and haven't yet used it in any mixed drinks. It's an uncommon Bourbon, and I plan to revisit it in about a month to see if my palate or the aeration has altered the flavor. I do like it, but I don't think it's for everyone.

My knowledge of this dram is limited, except that it surpassed my expectations. This Texas bourbon, finished in Pinot Noir casks, is likely quite young but offers a pleasant, albeit simple, integration. Creamy vanilla, peaches, a biscuit-like crust resembling cobbler, and a subtle red berry note from the wine casks conclude the experience. It has a medium body and finish, with a slight drying sensation from oak tannins. Waiting for a flight would be far less enjoyable.

Quite enjoyable... departing Dallas on a day trip, I felt compelled to sample the sole Texas whiskey on the list... a pleasant surprise... no overwhelming alcohol presence, sweet vanilla, and ample oak to support it. Cheers...

Aroma: honey, fruit, and a subtle rickhouse scent. Flavor: mellow and smooth. Fruit comes through first, followed by a faint oak finish. Overall: A very nice bourbon with a wine finish.

Quite drinkable but lacks a distinct character. Tastes like an immature bourbon.
