Rebel Yell Straight Rye (Discontinued)

This uses the same mash bill (95% rye/5% malted barley) from MGP as many other well-known ryes, including Templeton, Bulleit, Redemption, James E. Pepper, and George Dickel. It has only been aged for two years, but it seems vibrant and fresh in my opinion. The aroma is typical rye and dill, bold and intense. Rye spice carries onto the palate; it's not mild, this is bold pumpernickel rye in its youth. A light sweetness is in the background, but dill and rye are dominant. The finish is medium, dry, with more rye lingering. Overall, this is a bold, raw whiskey. It's not as polished as some, but perhaps it shouldn't be. It's a great change of pace from the sweetness of bourbon, offering its own unique characteristics. Plus, I bought it on sale for $19. It's a solid 74/100.

This works for me as a rye, with very subtle mint and herbal notes like a high-rye MGP product. Its young age of two years leaves a lot to be desired, and I prefer the enhanced flavors found in the Dickel offering.

Better suited for larger servings than for sipping. Its malt notes are very pronounced, with some smoke and spice present. I'm not a huge fan and it wasn't what I anticipated from a rye. Part of the Masters of Malt American Whiskey Advent Calendar #2.

Aroma of dill, sweet fruit gum, and no alcohol sting. Initial taste brings more of that sweet fruit. A hint of dill appears. Minimal burn. Ending is brief but pleasant with a subtle spice note.

Mediocre overall. Suitable for cocktails, but bland as a standalone drink. It offers some spice and faint fruit, but the finish is lacking.

Malt and rye bread are prominent initially, followed by sweet floral fruit with a perfectly balanced peppery spice. Excellent enjoyed straight or mixed in drinks.
