Quarter Horse Wheated

The quarter horse wheated seems to be a brand-new release as of fall 2022. I bought it with minimal online information and no reviews, primarily because the quarter horse reserve offered exceptional value and flavor in my past experience. - It's quite decent for a 2-year-old wheated bourbon. - The closest comparison I can make is to Weller Special Reserve (WSR). While WSR is older, slightly more complex, and smoother, it's also very difficult to find. WSR uses the Buffalo Trace wheated mash bill of corn, wheat, and malted barley (percentages undisclosed), whereas the QHW mash bill is 70% corn, 21% winter wheat, and 9% malted barley. - Nose: Faint oak and ethanol. - Palate: Sweet oak, light brown sugar, a bit spicier than typical for a wheater (in a good way), it's sweet but not boring or overwhelmingly classic bourbon. The body is on the lighter side. - Finish: Short, with a subtle hint of cocoa. - Not quite as good as quarter horse reserve, which is an outstanding product in the $30 range. My ratings for comparable products: - Quarter Horse Wheated (QHW): 3.5–3.75/5.0 - Weller Special Reserve (WSR): 3.75–4.0/5.0 - Bernheim 7 Year Wheat Whiskey: 3.75–4.0/5.0 - Quarter Horse Reserve: 4.0/5.0 - Old Weller Antique (OWA): 4.25/5.0 Price: $27 for 750 ml. *I'm unsure if there are other 2-year-old wheated bourbons on the market, but it will be fascinating to observe its development as it ages into the 4–6+ year range.

The aroma isn't overly intense, offering a somewhat floral scent with caramel undertones. The taste and texture are quite weak. The flavor is subtle and brief. You detect some brown sugar and oak, but no particularly engaging tastes. However, it does seem rather sweet. All things considered, for less than $30, it's a workable option for mixing.

I enjoy it. It deviates from the majority of bourbons I have sampled. Perhaps it's my first wheated bourbon. It's light, yet refined. A subtle spice accompanied by mild sweetness. It would be excellent on the rocks on a warm summer afternoon.

If I weren't already inebriated, this would be undrinkable. No more drinking it straight. It's a mixer, and I'm uncertain if it can be salvaged even as a mixer, but it will get you intoxicated. Perhaps.

Excellent value for the price. I enjoy drinking it on the rocks; it's very flavorful for a bourbon costing $26 a bottle. Very pleased with the quality.

Highly overlooked and very full of flavor. Incredibly smooth for its price; it's unbeatable.
