Prairie Organic Gin

Sampled from a 50ml portion. No prior experience with this, but I never pass up 50ml samples of new items. The aroma is quite sweet, reminiscent of pure corn whiskey new make, likely due to the organic corn used as the base spirit. There are also some lighter vegetal notes, like cucumber and other green-skinned vegetables. The juniper is prominent, with noticeable black pepper notes, but it's overshadowed by the sweet base spirit. The initial taste presents a light body, and sweetness is the first sensation, though not as intense as in the aroma. The same light vegetal notes return, closely matching the vegetables found in a backyard garden during summer. The juniper appears last, concluding with a surprising spice kick that lingers longer than anticipated. There's a characteristic that makes this gin seem overly sweet, almost syrupy, though it doesn't taste that way, only feels slightly so. It has the body of a less expensive spirit but the taste of a higher quality one simultaneously. I haven't seen a full-size bottle of this anywhere (though I might simply not have been looking for it), but this appears to be the ideal gin exclusively for G&Ts, where it would blend perfectly with the mixer, allowing its flavor to come through. Provided the price is reasonable, I would recommend this with a bar spout on top for generous pours.

It has a somewhat floral yet still piney aroma with some additional herbs and a touch of spice - quite like potpourri. There's some alcohol on the nose, but not excessive. It's also a little fruity. It's a captivating and rather pleasant nose. The palate, unfortunately, immediately brings water and bitterness. I do get the potpourri flavors and they are quite good, but there's this bitter taste like charred wood with some sulfur really interfering. As much as I appreciate that potpourri character on the nose (and also on the palate to the degree I can detect it), the flaws are overwhelming. It's fairly rough too as it finishes. The burn isn't the most extreme, but it doesn't have a pleasant peppery quality accompanying it. It does at least taste somewhat like gin, though.

Very sweet with a pine aroma. The initial taste was sharp, only touching the front of my palate, but it became light, sweet, and smooth afterward. It lacks depth, but it's decent for its price and a respectable organic producer.

Sweet, with a dominant grain character and minimal hints of juniper and herbs, especially after adding water. It improved when mixed, though vodka would work just as well in its place. Skip it if you're looking for or wanting Gin.

Score: 8/23 Quite sweet with a little bite, a touch of spice, some flowery notes, a bit of neutral water, alcohol presence, and a hint of rubber. I believe my initial score might have been slightly too critical, but not excessively so.

Good spirit overall. Mellow, with light flavor, but not particularly special. However, it's inexpensive and worth considering if you're on a budget.
