Established in 2017, Pōkeno Whisky Co. is situated just over 50km southeast of Auckland on New Zealand's North Island. Matt Johns founded the company. The yearly evaporation rate, known as the angel's share, reaches approximately 8% due to the subtropical environment. This single malt whisky is crafted using barley from the family farm on the South Island and volcanic spring water from the North Island. Discovery undergoes complete maturation in either first-fill bourbon, oloroso sherry, or PX sherry casks. Subsequently, the three individual components are blended and bottled at 43% ABV. The brand debuted in the U.S. in January 2023. (SRP $75)

Nose is rich and tropical with ripe banana and papaya. Lots of dried dark fruit with some bright candied citrus shining through. Taste is chocolate-covered dried fruit. Finishes with raisiny sherry. A bit hot and slightly astringent but the overall texture is actually quite amazing for it being as low as 43%. Well done, though I'm not sure it's necessarily worth the price.
Smells like semisweet banana candy. This carries slightly to the palate with notes of dried fruit and sugar from malt. The texture is soft. It's easy to drink. Not outstanding, but a dependable single malt.
A good balance between bourbon and sherry characteristics, though it borders on uninteresting.
Fantastic spirit bursting with sherry character. Has a rock candy sweetness and a viscous mouthfeel.
Very hot, likely due to its youth.
