Planteray Trinidad 1997 Single Cask (Kilchoman Whisky Cask Maturation)

Occasionally, I see the comment, "Maybe I got a bad bottle" in a review here. I've never questioned a dram in that way, until now. My understanding is that oxidation, UV light, and heat or temperature fluctuations can alter a spirit's flavor, or otherwise cause it to degrade or break down. But unless a distributor or store was foolish enough to store bottles in direct sunlight or a hot attic, it seems unlikely (though possible, it's not something I've knowingly experienced). The only other possibility would be a faulty cork. But wouldn't that be noticeable upon opening the bottle? Which brings me to this rum. It's from Trinidad and part of the aging was done in used casks from a specific distillery. I've tried at least a half-dozen different types of this brand, and in my opinion, they've ranged from good to excellent. As for that specific distillery, I could probably spend an afternoon relaxing in one of their used casks and enjoy every moment. And yet, this rum is dreadful. On the palate, there's an immediate and intense hit of smoke that I can only describe as liquid ashtray. The smoke eventually fades, but it's replaced by a sensation that reminds me of fetid pond water with a touch of sweetness. It seems improbable that the creator of this brand and his team would release something so awful. Which, for the first time in my experience with spirits, leads me to say, "Maybe I got a bad bottle." What are your thoughts? I'm holding off on a numerical rating until I have a bit more information.

Mildly sweet initially, then dominated by a very smoky flavor. The finish is smoky, receding back to sweet and peppery notes.

Sweet, well-rounded, and also smoky. It has complexity. Excellent for sipping on its own or for use in a cocktail.
