Pittyvaich 30 Year (2020 Special Release)

Getting into the truly special part of the annual Diageo collection, here's a real treat from a distillery that's no longer operating, which I haven't tried before. It’s a sophisticated dram that I suspect would reveal many more shades and layers over the course of a bottle than a small sample can hint at. It starts creamy on the nose, with suggestions of apple and malt. It’s sweet on the first sip, evolving into confectioner’s sugar (aka icing sugar, as we call it back home), ginger, tangerine, lemon, and more cream. The finish is long and dry, with lemon and tangy fruits. The flavors are rich and enticing. This would make a fine gift for any jaded whisky collector.

I often find older Scotches too woody, but this one isn't. It's rich and full in the mouth, with Lyle’s Golden Syrup, exotic spices, and a hint of honey. It opens up significantly, so wait 20-30 minutes after pouring before sipping. It has a beautiful, distinct, and smoothly complex Speyside character with a long finish. Highly recommended.

Nose: 4.5/5 old book, nut, floral smoke Palate: 4/5 bitter, coffee, light sour, sour cream Finish: 3.75/5 medium long finish Adding water mellows the alcohol content and reveals more paper notes. There's a unique quality to this dram that sets it apart from other bottles.

Nose: Freshly cut grass, dried herbs, grass again, warming spice, and salinity. Palate: Notes of basil, tart grapefruit, sharp pepper, spicy ginger, grassy elements, and salt. Finish: Lingering spice, an oily mouthfeel, and a rich, extended conclusion.
