About this bottle

Established in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson, Oban is a distillery situated in the West Highlands of Scotland. This exclusive single malt expression underwent initial maturation in European oak butts and American oak hogsheads. For over four years, it completed its aging in oloroso and Palo Cortado sherry barrels. It is presented at cask strength, 55.3% ABV, and will be available starting April 2025. (SRP $150)

A fellow reviewer's assessment was spot on; I wish I had heeded their advice and skipped this. While I enjoy a Sherry bomb, I'd prefer Dewars 15 over this. It's tight, with no discernible age. A little water helps, but neat, it has an unpleasant sulfurous character. I was hoping for an Aberlour A'bunadh experience with evident age, but this isn't it. I'll consume it, but certainly wouldn't repurchase or recommend it. Update: This whiskey is actually dreadful. I keep trying to find something good about it, experimenting with water, and blending it with other sherried whiskies. It consistently ends with a cat pee aroma and is objectively a poor scotch. I would be displeased even at half the price. It makes me question why certain online personalities endorse it (is that person really recommending this?).

Rhea Hacker 3.8

Light malt and sherry on the nose. Complex. Malt and a touch of smoke on the palate. Possibly a slight vegetal note. Some pepperiness and burn on the finish. Developed a maple syrup note after adding a few drops of water.

Lenora Jeffries 4.5

This works very well for me. For a cask strength spirit, it isn't too harsh. It's very sweet on the nose and palate. I detect a lot of caramel and brown sugar. Despite this, it's a well-balanced drink.

Maude Duff 5.0

A delightful blend of salty, savory, and sweet with hints of raisins, raspberries, salted caramel, apple pie, bergamot, and ginger.

Orion Lundy 4.5

The sherry influence was somewhat less rich and creamy, emphasizing the drier, herbal quality of a sherry. It's nice and full. Distinctive.

Jamel Locklear 3.3

Uninspiring. The wine-like quality isn't to my liking.
