North Star Series 21 Campbeltown 2014

Nose: A powerful aroma unfolds with abundant golden syrup, tobacco, fig preserves, plum jam, a waxed oak cabinet, chocolate, and a hint of anise. As it sits, sweeter scents emerge, led by citrus and stone fruits. Palate: The initial taste is both sweet and tangy, presenting redcurrant jelly and morello cherries. This transitions into a malt-forward character, supported by spicy notes of chili, intense cinnamon, and tannin. Hints of chewing tobacco and strongly brewed black tea appear near the end, but a mocha undertone provides creaminess, balancing any harshness. Finish: Moderate in length. It carries malty and dark fruit notes that evolve into a leathery sensation in the lingering taste, which has a slightly salty and bitter quality. This is identified simply as a mixed Campbeltown malt. A contact secured it from the group that owns Glen Scotia, and while technically a Glen Scotia with a small amount of another whisky added, it's quite plausible this is purely Glen Scotia, marketed as a blend for strategic purposes. It undeniably resembles Glen Scotia. It was acquired at four years old (likely matured in a repurposed bourbon hogshead) and subsequently transferred into port and oloroso octave casks for an additional four years of finishing. Pleasant enough, but even at eight years, I found it somewhat immature and assertive. The group's opinions were divided – many enjoyed it considerably, while an equal number found it just satisfactory. Nevertheless, it sold out rapidly and is no longer available locally, prompting speculation if the appeal is solely due to the "Campbeltown" designation. "Better than Average": 82/100 (3.25 stars)
