Moore's Dry Gin

Nose: Soft and sweetly fragrant. Juniper is present but subdued, and cardamom is similarly subtle. Sage and citrus are the dominant aromas – the sage is warm, savory, and enveloping, and the citrus is deep and sweet, more like very sweet orange than lemon. Elderflower and lemongrass aromas are also present. A very calming and inviting nose. Palate: Soft, voluptuous, sweet, and well-balanced on the arrival. The development shows the juniper as mainly a peppery top-note, and I suspect the use of some native Australian botanicals like pepper-berry and finger lime. The texture is gorgeous, like creamy satin. This is an excellent palate. Finish: Medium/long. The palate fades into a warm, velvety citrus aftertaste with tangerine and sweet lime, accompanied by herbal undertones. Excellent. This is a marvelous gin, truly very, very good. It is made by Philip Moore, the master distiller at Distillery Botanica in Erina, north of Sydney on the New South Wales coast. He also produces Garden Grown gin (sold by a different company), but it has a lighter and more ethereal profile. This is one of those gins that is not only drinkable neat but perhaps even more enjoyable that way than as a mixer. It has the mouthfeel and weight of genever, but the aroma and taste are distinctively "Australian contemporary" gin in style. Many good gins are being produced in Australia currently, but most attention goes to a few with clearly substantial marketing budgets. However, I would choose this over almost anything else. It ranks alongside Dingle, Method & Madness, Cotswolds, Herno, and Monkey 47, and it's just shy of my favorite gin, McHenry’s Federation. If there were just a bit more complexity to both the nose and palate, I would give this 5 stars. It's a great product at a fair price. The only people who might not enjoy this would be fans of intensely dry gin for use in very dry martinis, but if you prefer a soft, creamy, and comforting gin profile, this is an obvious choice.
