I'm thrilled to have discovered this gin at my local shop, as the bottle itself is beautifully crafted. Initially, I feared the gin inside might be mediocre at best, but it boasts an incredible blend of citrus and spices that make it truly special. The description online indicates the Mermaid gin contains Juniper, Elderflower, Rock Samphire, and Grains of Paradise. I hadn't encountered the latter two ingredients before, but they contribute to this gin's rich flavor and smooth drinkability. It's bottled at 84 proof and has minimal burn when sipped neat, and it pairs well with tonic water and fruit juices. This gin truly excels in a Martini, but careful selection of vermouth is crucial. I typically enjoy Dolin, but it didn't harmonize well here, resulting in a Martini that was overly peppery. Using Cocchi Americano, however, produced an amazing and flavorful result. As a side note, I plan to purchase another bottle of Dolin to determine if it was indeed the issue. I enjoyed sampling this gin with the arrival of warmer weather and look forward to exploring other spirits from this distillery. Cheers.

About this bottle
Mermaid Gin is produced at the Isle of Wight Distillery, situated off England's southern coast. Its creation incorporates ten botanicals, with three gathered locally: elderflower, Boadicea hops, and rock samphire, also known as Mermaid's Kiss. Other botanicals used include coriander, licorice, grains of paradise, and fresh lemon zest. The bottles, which are plastic-free, feature a design inspired by a mermaid's tail scales. As of February 2023, the US market carries all three Mermaid Gin varieties, namely this flagship bottling, Mermaid Pink Gin, and Mermaid Zest Gin, with a suggested retail price of $34.99.

The nose presents black pepper, lime peel, juniper, flowers, an oceanic quality, and grapefruit. The palate is fruity and peppery, with grapefruit, tangerine, flowers, lime peel, and nectarine.
Enjoyable on its own, and even better when paired with Fever Tree Naturally Light.
