Mars Iwai Tradition

The color resembles Pantone 144. The aroma has malt, sweet apples, quince, cut grass, and an ethanol/paint note. The palate has a slightly viscous texture, with a corn sweetness that persists into the finish, accompanied by a touch of white pepper and a hint of smoke at the very end. I actually like this more than I remembered; the whisky exhibits an intriguing blend of bourbon and scotch characteristics. However, I object to 40% ABV whiskies on principle. The financial aspects of it are completely contrary to artisanal craftsmanship. The minimum standard ABV (which 40% is) isn't a magical point for optimal flavor; it's purely an economic choice, using maximum water dilution to meet whisky standards and increase production. While many whiskies I enjoy are only slightly higher at 43%, that at least shows some consideration beyond pure economics. There's also the issue of the non-standard bottle. It holds 750ml, but the slightly rounded bottom appears to depict a mountainous shape near the base, apparently symbolizing Japan's highest distillery at approximately 2,600 feet. The corresponding shoulders seem to show liquid streaks, similar to the 'legs' seen after swirling whisk(e)y or wine. Whisky shelves are certainly crowded. But gaining customer loyalty has nothing to do with the bottle or label. Would I purchase it again? No. It has no harsh edges, and I've sampled far inferior whiskies. But there's no reason to use it in a cocktail at only 40% ABV when many cheaper and higher-proof options are readily available, and while it's not entirely straightforward, it's not distinctive enough to keep on hand. Would I buy it if it were bottled at a higher proof with more transparency? Possibly.

Is the saying "the best whisky is the whisky that's free" familiar? Well, I've found the exception to that idea. A new Japanese whisky has arrived in Ecuador: Iwai Tradition. It's beneficial to be one of the few whisky reviewers in my nation, as people consistently give me new bottlings. Iwai Tradition is bottled at 40% ABV. On the nose, far too much grain whisky. Pears and a lemon air freshener scent. Sawdust and an aged, oxidized green apple. Like correction fluid, hand sanitizer, and farm fruits. Gooseberries. On the palate, it begins like sugary water, but it's very muted. Faint apple notes; young and harsh. Ginger. The finish is quite unpleasant. Dry. Like hand sanitizer and almonds. There's nothing noteworthy here. Overall, this is not good at all. I disliked it; the nose and palate are below my average rating, the finish is off-putting, and there's no balance whatsoever. My score for this is a generous 52 out of 100, which is a bit too high for what it truly is.

This Mars Iwai Traditional Japanese Whisky is a delightful dram. The aroma evokes a sunny garden day with its complex scent of sweet air and blossoms. The taste is remarkably full on the palate with honey, almonds, and maltiness. The finish is long with sweet cereal honey, all beautifully integrated. Considering its price, this is an excellent bottle of Japanese whisky. It's also a great starting point if you're uncertain about Japanese whiskies.

The aroma has an aggressive quality, almost stinging my sinuses initially. Once past the alcohol's sharpness, deep barrel aromas emerge, which are overwhelming. On the palate, it's a bit smoother than anticipated, but still delivers a powerful tannic impact. It's harsh and makes me question my choices. This isn't a desirable trait in a whiskey, and I would advise against it if you're casually curious. Glad I can get a different bottle.

Flaviar advent calendar: Smoke and peat are the initial flavors. Unexpected, but highly pleasing. Following that are caramel and cherry notes, with a distant sweetness of grape appearing later. I'm confident this bottle will eventually be mine.

Exploring a 'region' is always a gamble. This budget-friendly Japanese whiskey detour is unrefined. It has a strong alcohol aroma and a disappointing flavor. I'm hoping more sampling will reveal its merits...
