Maker's Mark Cask Strength Batch 21-01 (110.6 Proof)

Another sample enjoyed at Oak and Steel. Prior tasting notes offer further details on my experience at this local establishment (in the KCMO region). This particular Markers Mark bottle is designated 21-01, with a proof of 110.6 ABV (55.3%). My understanding of Maker's Mark (and spirits in general) deepened considerably at Oak and Steel. It was a pleasure conversing with the proprietor, whose knowledge of whisky far surpasses my own. Regarding this specific bottling... Aroma: Honey, Cinnamon, and Apple. The texture was thick and creamy. Exhibits prominent legs in the glass. Flavor: Sweet, apple, cinnamon, cream, and vanilla. This marked my initial tasting of a cask-strength Maker's Mark, and I was quite impressed. It's both illuminating and somewhat vexing to realize that locating this ideal Maker's Mark bottle means I might never find it again, compelling me to either purchase multiples immediately or risk a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It's fascinating, however, how each production run can possess such distinct and unique flavor profiles. I truly enjoyed this one, but it could take a long time, or no time at all, to discover one I prefer more. This particular bottling likely wouldn't prompt an immediate purchase, but I certainly wouldn't refuse it if encountered at a bar or elsewhere. Ratings are independent of cost and reflect only my personal impressions.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and was surprised it was only $40. Brief review: It's like drinking liquid caramel candy (think Werther's Original) covered in vanilla and brown sugar. There's a very slight initial burn, but it fades quickly and doesn't negatively affect the flavor profile at all. The sweetness lingers in the back of the mouth with no smoky aftertaste.

* Nose: Spicy wood. A hint of dark fruit appears later, followed by dried fruit. Dilution significantly diminishes the aroma. * Palate: Anise spice, some bitterness, acetone, wood. With ice, chocolate emerges, then vanilla and caramel. The bitterness recedes, and sweetness takes over. * Finish: long.

This was batch 21-02. A pleasant sipper for a Maker's Mark Cask Strength at 55.2% ABV. The nose offers light notes of fruit and vanilla. A significant hit of spice greets the palate, followed by a balance of sweetness. There isn't much depth on the finish. I tried it with an ice cube, but prefer it neat. Very smooth and drinkable for a cask strength spirit.

Oh, it's spicy. Holds up very well against a cigar.
