Mackmyra is Sweden's first malt whisky distillery. I recall going on a "browsing" excursion with a friend to a neighborhood liquor shop and we were surprised to see the First Edition of Mackmyra Single Malt on display: "Sweden produces whisky?" My initial impression of the aroma is "Scandinavian in a bottle." Floral, apple, grass, and crisp mountain air brushing against pine trees. Later, this aroma evolves into a captivating citrus and caramel combination. My initial sips deliver a mouth-tingling warmth, subtle peat, and a minimalist approach to caramel and orange. Over time, this similar flavor profile deepens with the addition of oak and star anise. For a lighter tasting whisky, the finish is remarkably enduring with a hint of peppercorn. While this possesses a modest palate, I do not believe that whiskies must assault you with spice, peat, and sherry to capture your attention. I value Mackmyra First Edition's distinctiveness which lives up to the label's statement of being "a whisky for you who live life less ordinary." Mackmyra truly lives up to its name. 8/10

Sweden is making its mark in whiskey production. While they have a considerable journey to rival Scotland and Japan, this initial release shows promise. The aroma is surprisingly faint, and the taste is sharp, reflecting its youth, but with strong vanilla notes (distinct from American oak vanilla, suggesting Swedish wood influence). The finish is short and sharp. It's not among my top ten, but it's quite good, especially for the price. I'm eagerly anticipating a more aged release from this distillery in the future. It brings to mind my initial impressions of Kilchoman—new but full of potential.

A quality whisky that shows promise. It presents a delightful vanilla, floral coconut, peach, creamy, and subtly spicy aroma, and it's smooth going down. However, occasionally, an artificial vanilla cough drop lingers in the aftertaste, though it eventually fades.

Sampled this during our 'Swedish Night' at the Whiskey tasting club. I found it somewhat lighter than the others but still a bit sharp. A very respectable whiskey at a considerably better price point.
