Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year

This is significantly different from the 12 DoubleWood. They've expertly handled the rum cask finishing, keeping the whisky in seasoned rum casks for only a few months to prevent the rum from overwhelming the Scotch. You immediately detect the rum's sweetness on the nose, with tropical fruits, bananas, and coconut enhancing the characteristic Balvenie vanilla and honey notes. The palate also offers a pleasant vanilla and fruity sweetness. Truly excellent work!

The nose presents prominent vanilla and toffee, with a delightful fruity undertone that strongly evokes rich cognac. The palate is smoother, revealing honey and gentle spice alongside tropical pineapple and coconut flavors. The finish is brief and sweet, creating a strong desire for another taste. This is an easily drinkable scotch, bright with a wonderfully balanced rum character.

Nose: Classic Balvenie profile with dried fruits, honey, and vanilla, complemented by hints of tropical fruits and spice, plus coconut. Palate: Sweet, with caramel, more dried fruits, spice, and tropical fruits, leading to a pleasant, lingering oily finish. It's well-balanced, with the rum's influence complementing rather than overpowering.

Clear medium-rich gold color. The nose offers aromatic citrus, tropical fruit, richness, wood, sweetness, and a waxy, oily character. The palate is rich and smooth with honey, vanilla, dried spicy notes, licorice, sweetness, smoothness, citrus, floral elements, wood, tropical fruit, garam masala spice, and toffee. The finish is well-balanced, medium-long, fruity, rich, and smooth. 43% ABV. Medium to full body.

The aroma is that of aged rum; I wouldn't guess it was Scotch. Upon tasting, oak and vanilla initially dominate, masking the rum notes until the flavor develops and peat emerges at the end. It goes down smoothly.

Remarkably, I hadn't sampled this before; perhaps its common availability meant I never felt compelled to try it. It has a bit of caramel on the nose, a rich palate, and a medium-thick mouthfeel, with a slight bitterness on the finish. It's a perfectly adequate entry-level malt.
