Lark Single Malt Distiller's Selection

We're all aware that fine single malts are now produced beyond Scotland. Consider India (Amrut), France (Brenne, though its origin is debatable given the distiller's US residence), Japan (Suntory, Nikka, Hanyu, or Karuizawa), and even Tasmania. Sullivan's Cove notably won a top whisky award previously, but this expression is vastly superior. Unlike Sullivan's use of French casks, this one is actually available. While pricey, the cost likely reflects substantial shipping expenses rather than excessive marketing budgets (unlike those elaborate Viking decanters from Highland Park!).

The 2019 release has a quite sweet fruity aroma. Initially described as "lychee" but I'm getting more tinned apricots or peaches. Port casks are also noticeable on the nose. Taste is quite pleasant. Initially quite smooth but finishes with a bit of a kick. If you are comparing it to other Special Releases you would say it is overpriced but in my opinion it is worth the price to have some truly unique from one of Tasmania's best distilleries!

This spirit could reach a higher rating with additional maturation and refinement, but it's already a wonderful whiskey.

Wonderful. Hints of caramel, vanilla, grains, dried plums, and sultanas with a Port and sherry character to the finish.

Nose of caramel, followed by spice, then peat emerges. The oily texture gives way to a dry finish.

A smooth, peaty spirit, among the finest.
