Some years back, I met an old companion, and we picked a location between our homes that neither of us had visited. We decided on New Orleans. While deep in the French Quarter, enjoying the impromptu performances and parades, I went into a shop selling spirits. I asked about their local selections. One of the bottles I purchased was LA1 Louisiana Whiskey. This is from batch #15 in 2016, bottle 516 out of 624. The nose is sweet, quite like hot cocoa. The taste... is pale. Considering it's Louisiana's first aged whiskey since prohibition, perhaps I had too high expectations. LA1 has moderate heat, subtle corn notes, but feels very weak with hints of barley and a metallic finish. A positive point is how easily it drinks at 94 proof. Unlike the rich Southern food, delightful beignets, and music, it doesn't leave me craving more. Rated 6/10.
