Leland Merino 3.5

Nose: Aroma resembles peanut butter mixed with powdered sugar (like the inside of a Reese’s), a medicinal cherry scent, dry oak, and occasionally a hint of grass. Palate: Flavors of roasted, salted peanuts, a mild ethanol tingle, and oak spice. Finish: A light honey and oak spice blend leading to a drying bitterness with heavy tannins. An exceptionally sweet and captivating aroma that evokes familiar scents from both Jim Beam and bourbon in general. The palate shifts to a more savory profile, rich in spice and bitterness from the barrel's aging. I'm thoroughly impressed by the oily texture of this bourbon, which coats the glass as it's swirled. However, the palate-drying bitter finish leaves something to be desired. I must admit, the lingering tingle is quite enjoyable and provides a fun sensation. I strongly suggest acquiring a store-selected Knob Creek from your local shop if available; many 14 and 15-year-old barrels are going for $45 a bottle.

Truman Hays 4.5

Rich and sweet. Peanuts, oak, pepper. A long, bitter finish. 14.5 years old. A bargain at under $50. I wish I had bought a case.
