Killowen Stone Soup Poitin

My sole encounter with poitin, from a decade back, was a terrible time. I've avoided it since. It felt like drinking Everclear. The bottle I tried was likely the worst available, and my ignorance led me to dismiss all poitin as harsh liquor. This bottling is the complete opposite of that past experience. It's a very limited run (around 200 bottles, all gone now; I sampled only 3cl). This spirit, made from Ireland's native liquor, is smoked with turf and then aged for 10 weeks in a PX cask alongside a mourne stone (used for boundary markers). It's utterly delightful. The aroma is intensely sweet, with notes of figs and dates. The taste is earthy, with hints of granite and oily brown sugar. The finish brings grapefruit and creme brûlée. These are probably all sold out, but if you encounter one—grab it instantly, open it, and share with companions. I have no idea what excellent poitin tastes like, but this has established the standard for me.
