Kilinger Unoaked Rye

I was pleasantly taken aback by the flavor of this spirit. It's quite unlike anything you'd anticipate; the obvious absence is that it's unoaked, meaning no flavor derives from the oak, which imparts that taste we all appreciate. The completely clear appearance almost makes you feel like you're drinking something other than whisky, like gin or vodka. Nevertheless, despite that, I appreciated the flavor of this unoaked whisky. It was distinct and invigorating to encounter something different. While it wasn't my preferred flavor profile, it's not a bad whisky and is certainly not unpleasant to consume. The initial impression was that it tasted a bit more potent than I had anticipated, almost like a direct impact, with sweetness on the palate. However, it went down much more easily than expected, though with a more pronounced ethanol presence and missing the harmony and taste that comes from wooden barrels. If it had been aged in oak casks instead of a copper pot, the flavor might have been more even. It likely would have also developed a standard whisky taste, which I suspect was the intention of the distiller with this bottling, using copper to set it apart from competitors.

Smooth and fruity, but it definitely lacks a whiskey character without wood aging. I wouldn't purchase it again, but I would drink it if offered.
