About this bottle

This is the fourth vintage bottling from Kilchoman, following their 2006, 2007, and 2008 releases. While the first three vintages were solely matured in ex-bourbon casks, this expression, distilled in 2008 and 2009, uses both oloroso butts and ex-bourbon casks for aging. It has been matured for over eight years and is bottled at 46% ABV.

I purchased several samples from Kilchoman during my visit for Feis Ile in 2018 and am now getting around to documenting my notes. I'd rank this among my less favored Kilchomans, though I generally appreciate their entire range, so it would still receive a solid B. While Machir Bay is the best value and similar to Ardbeg 10, and Sanaig and Loch Gorm offer sherry influence, the Vintage 2009 is distinguished more by its clear age statement than its finish, marking it as significantly older than Kilchoman's other regular offerings. The age might contribute slightly, but it bears a strong resemblance to Caol Ila 12. The nose has vegetal and peaty notes, with a vanilla flavor not found in other Kilchomans. The palate offers a pleasant lemon citrus taste, familiar to Machir Bay drinkers, more vanilla, and a light plum, alongside the typical Kilchoman smoke. The smoke is most prominent in the finish. Ultimately, this is like a slightly pricier bottle of Caol Ila 12, so I'm slightly lowering its rating on the star system.

The fifth pour from a custom Kilchoman tasting set gifted by my wife for my birthday. Similar to other special editions in this collection (Madeira/Sauterne Cask Matured), this 2009 Vintage exhibited a milder smoke on the nose, but thankfully, presented much more intensely on the palate. It's still a substantial peat presence, yet it harmonizes beautifully with sweet, delicate fruits. These flavors, along with a hint of smoke, persist in the lingering finish. I would likely acquire a bottle of this vintage or a subsequent release.

When asked about the latest round, I was upfront. Nothing was truly impressive. I then mentioned my preferred distilleries. They offered the newest 09 release, which I thought might save the evening. While not as good as Red Wine, Sanaig, or Loch Gorm, it is enjoyable. I'm giving it four stars. I'm looking forward to Dramfest in two weeks when the distillery owners will be present, allowing me to try other expressions and commend them on their excellent distillery and cask selection!

Smoky with considerable spice. Appears underaged, offering a slightly salty profile.
