John Emerald Purveyor's Series Double Oak Bourbon

This is my initial tasting of a locally produced bourbon. The spirit presents as a medium amber gold in the bottle. The aroma is strongly of oak. The dominant flavor that emerges immediately is the same oak, evoking the scent of freshly cut lumber or a cooperage. It goes down smoothly but lacks depth. The sweetness usually found in double oak or toasted oak bourbon is largely absent. The finish is short, without bitterness, and offers just a trace of dark chocolate. My initial impression is that it's a decent offering for the price, and I'm pleased to discover a drinkable bourbon made nearby. It certainly warrants further investigation.

The nose is dominated by oak. It's not a highly complex bourbon, but has good overall flavor. The oak is assertive and immediate, quickly giving way to sweetness that fades rapidly. The finish has spice and a brief warmth.

Classic bourbon characteristics, executed well. The oak finish isn't overly sweet, making it an excellent, affordable choice for regular enjoyment.
