J. Henry & Sons Anniversary Blend (2019 Edition)

J Henry & Sons 10th Anniv Blend; 5-9yr old bourbons; 63.2% abv Aroma: Intense vanilla extract on top, maraschino cherries, dark chocolate, creamed corn, sweet toasted oak, fresh rain on a field, butterscotch. Palate: This one enters intensely and feels oily. The flavors burst forth initially. It's syrupy sweet. Cherry pie, vanilla custard, crème brûlée, peach syrup with allspice and clove. The middle section becomes thin with corn mash, then the end roars back with dark cherry, cherry/vanilla cola, charred oak, and smoke. The high proof prickles the mid-palate with ginger and pepper spice. Finish: Cherry remains the primary fruit throughout the finish, pleasantly tinged with toasty oak, a whisper of ghost pepper, vanilla cream, wood smoke, and leather. This is a powerful spirit due to its proof. A full-on, no-holds-barred, pure bourbon. And it's stunning. Enthusiasts of cherry and oak-forward bourbons will find this appealing. The only downside is that the mid-palate fades between the entry and the backend. But the sheer intensity and range of flavors compensate for this.

Sampling the 2021 iteration. It's 61.08% ABV. Like most things from 2021, it's not particularly impressive. The nose is chalky and woody, with a slight resemblance to air freshener. The taste is woody with some floral elements. There's a mild burn. The finish is acceptable, but it's not something I particularly enjoy. I'm not fond of this specific woody finish. It might appeal to others, however. In my opinion, it's not worth the price.

An exceptional bourbon. It has a thick, oily, and rich mouthfeel. Sweet brown sugar and graham cracker notes are present, along with citrus and a perfectly balanced level of spice. It possesses a lovely warmth. I'm proud of this product from Wisconsin.

Impressive thick, oily, and chewy texture. Aromas of licorice and orange zest. Abundant spice, though not my preferred flavor combination. It's reminiscent of another spirit.

Excellent served straight, improves slightly when diluted.
