Jura 21 Year

An excellent dram that starts with a nose full of nuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, and various spices. It continues with a complex palate where the aromas from the nose are joined by chili and almond chocolate; I also detect brackish notes. The best part is the finish: long, brackish, and spicy, with notes of grass and earth. A bold and pure whisky, considering its origin. Truly very good, exceptional value. I don't consider it essential, except perhaps to understand the origin of the barrels, but it deserves an honorable mention for its color: real liquid gold! _______________________________________________________________________________ An excellent drink that begins with a nose full of nuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, and various spices. Aroma: Dark chocolate, toffee, chocolate pudding cups, oak. Flavor: Raisins and plums infused with cinnamon spice, a heat from white pepper, dark chocolate, oak, tootsie rolls, chocolate pudding. Finish: A long, lingering heat from white pepper spice, more chocolate pudding that fades to a sweet dark chocolate-covered raisin, with lingering cinnamon spice. Score: 85/100 Final Thoughts: This certainly presented as an aged Scotch, with its deep, intense, damp, aged, soaked oak scent and taste. It smelled dark, with a slight hint of dark stone fruits in the aroma, but was otherwise dominated by a chocolate pudding cup and cocoa powder character throughout. It seemed there was at least a small component of sherried Scotch, but the chocolate notes were predominant. Nothing particularly off-putting, but the cheap chocolate pudding cup character really detracted from it for me. Would I drink it if offered? - Yes Would I specifically order it? - No Would I buy a bottle? - No

A fine pour, reasonably priced and packed with flavor. I'm a big admirer of most Jura Whiskies, and this one is a good example that earns praise. When smelling, it's mostly sweet, even for a lightly peated whisky. It has heather peat and is very sweet, with orange zest and orange candy. Hints of coffee appear and grow stronger after the first sip. On the tongue, it's much peatier. Tobacco and cigarette notes are present, along with ginger spice and some citrus fruits. A second sip brought out more earthy qualities. The best part is the lingering finish. A smoky cigarette aftertaste. Wow, this is incredibly interesting, like nicotine. An earthy mud finish. An impressive end, truly so earthy, almost like dirt but in a pleasant way. It lasts a very long time. Overall, this pour earns a solid 89 out of 100. I don't think it's for daily drinking, but it will surely surprise you. I had it a second time and detected many prunes and sherry notes.

I felt like an older person telling a younger person, “damn it, young man, grow up!”. I expected more from a 21-year-old. I've always felt Jura lacks direction and a signature style, making its products inconsistent. This was quite evident in this 21-year-old. I anticipated austere elegance, refinement, and class, all wrapped in a powerful Islander-style oceanic brine and sea salt. What I received was a mix of flavors, from chocolate to fruits to oak. At 21 years old, stored in warehouses near rugged, ocean-battered shorelines, I'd expect that influence to permeate the whisky – basic osmosis. So, the disappointment, for me at least, isn't that it's not good; it's a decent enough whisky. However, I'm not getting the influence I'd expect from a 21-year-old Islander.

Spoiler alert: This is nothing like the Jura 16. Another spoiler alert: Distiller's 88 is a disgrace. Sultana raisins, prunes, and vanilla hit your nose with everything you'd want and expect from a sherry-influenced whisky. The palate has an added element of sweet almond paste that really ties all the aromas together (as a side note, if you're not from the UK, using words like marzipan instead of almond paste or cream is just silly). The finish is incredibly complex with a hard-to-pinpoint aroma that truthfully reminds me of marijuana (you know what I mean). This is truly pleasing.

Quite an intriguing pour. The aroma is sweet citrus; I can’t really discern any peat, so if it exists, it’s faint. A touch of vanilla then emerges, followed by coastal qualities—salt and brine, but not excessively. For a 21-year-old, it lacks the refinement I anticipated, yet it possesses all the correct elements. The taste brings citrus and some spice. I missed the heather peat. More oceanic hints appear. It’s balanced, with no single flavor dominating. I find myself returning to it and discovering new nuances. I’ve sampled superior 21-year-olds, but this is a dependable dram.
