Ironroot Promethean Straight Bourbon

Batch P14; Aged 30 months 50% abv; 100 proof Opened 3 months ago Smell: Intense caramel and gingerbread, brown sugar, toasted bread, grilled corn, fake cherry, Chinese black tea, moderate oak, and moderate alcohol. Taste: Corn syrup, caramel, molasses, raisins, medicinal cherry, cinnamon roll, and black tea that's been brewed too long. The finish is medium, with sweet oak, allspice, cinnamon, brown sugar, and a slight sting of alcohol. While not quite as excellent as Harbinger, this is another strong offering from Ironroot. I don't always crave these intensely sweet corn whiskeys, but when I do, Ironroot's creations are tough to top for the cost. I've sampled all three of Balcones' Blue corn whiskeys, and while they aren't bourbon, they share a similar flavor character to Ironroot's bourbon. I'd suggest Ironroot before any of those three.

Nose: Astringent ethanol notes are immediately prominent, followed by some grain, stewed apples, and a trace of vanilla. Palate: Grain-forward initially, then a surge of pepper spice in the mid-palate, with some fruit and vanilla toward the end. Finish: Vanilla and caramel notes carry through with some spice, providing a medium to long finish.

I was wary of this whiskey after trying their Harbinger. However, to my pleasant surprise, the Harbinger's impact was not severe. Promethean’s Nose offers notes of licorice and oak, with a persistent vanilla finish.

Some caramel and vegetation on the nose. The palate has hints of graham cracker and honey with some vegetal undertones. The finish is fairly brief and inoffensive. Better than most other batches of Texas whiskies outside of Still Austin.

Drinking p13-30 months. Nose: Wood, charred notes, brown sugar, raisins, sweet corn. Palate: Rich mouthfeel, pleasant alcohol presence that transitions to a slightly dry, artificial cinnamon flavor akin to Hot Tamales, finishing with a hint of vanilla.

On the nose, caramel and butterscotch. On the palate, heavy butterscotch, maybe some licorice on the end.
