This originates from a selection of barrels of the soft red wheat distillate acquired by Hyvee in Kansas City. Some barrels from this acquisition were placed in Toasted French Oak and aged an additional year. It has a nice, oily appearance in the glass. The aroma is very earthy, like wet clay, and herbaceous. The palate is unique, with continued earthiness alongside rich milk chocolate, licorice, and a wheaty sweetness. At 100 proof, it could be perceived as hot or smooth. This one leans smooth, but still provides a pleasant warmth. The finish is herbaceous and continues the earthiness. I didn't initially love this, but the more I experience it, the more I appreciate it. There's only a subtle hint of oak, which is less than I'd expect from a re-barreling. Ice slightly reduces the earthiness; it's good either way. Holladay's (McCormick) soft red wheat is a superior whiskey. Every version I've tried has been good. This one lives up to expectations.
