Highland Park Freya

On the nose, it's quite good, though slightly muted. It begins with green apple juice and pears, giving an initial impression similar to a Glenfiddich 12yo. Hints of heather, stewed apples, white wine, and a pleasant maritime note emerge. After a few sips, it evolves into a wet vanilla cake, pineapple, and fruity soda water. The palate is absolutely perfect. It starts with fruit punch and fruit salad, followed by a robust spice flavor of ginger and clove. It's delicious, with macerated fruits and a cool sensation. It reminds me of wine sangria fruits. Amazing. The aftertaste features the peaty element. It's herbal, a robust peat, leaving a pleasant burning sensation on the lips and tongue. There are maritime notes with ginger hints and cider undertones. Overall, this expression successfully delivers. It provided a rich, delightful dram with great, clean fruitiness; it also offered some intense notes, particularly on the finish: pleasantly spicy, peaty, and warming. While the nose was slightly less impressive, this is a memorable single malt. I rate it 96 out of 100.

For a 15-year-old expression, it's quite remarkable. It evoked a blend of the finest aged single pot still Irish whiskeys while possessing the complexity of a Scotch. The floral characteristics are succeeded by a sweet, spicy flavor and a salty finish, very characteristic of Highland Park. The crucial question remains: setting aside the elaborate packaging and the Viking branding, does its value justify the cost, considering it's a 15-year-old? In this instance, I believe it does, primarily because this specific combination of floral, sweet, and salty notes is difficult to find elsewhere.

Certain sensations are hard to put into words using terms related to other senses. The smell, the feel in the mouth, the way the flavor changes: all these are like the sound of a great concert piano, or of a loved one. Freya, the Norse goddess of love, war, and leader of the Valkyries, is the perfect namesake for this captivating, sensual drink. Do not let the age statement fool you into thinking it lacks refinement or strength. This bottle holds a place of honor on my shelf.

Excited to finally sample this! My preferred distillery is Highland Park, and Freya lives up to that. While I lean towards more heavily sherry-influenced expressions like Odin, this may be the finest bourbon-aged whisky available. It offers tropical fruit and a mild smokiness, and drinks remarkably well for a cask-strength spirit. 95

Quite a Scotch, this Freya! White flowers, salt, dry biscuits, lemon and grapefruit, oysters with a shallot vinegar sauce and a glass of white wine, pears and bananas, and then a peated smoke that crowns it all. Highly refined, silky, complex, and complete. Top-tier stuff.

Excellent. It's smooth with a full mouthfeel. Subtle floral notes transition to a warming spice, concluding with the enduring earthiness of familiar peat.
