The nose is golden sweet honey with crisp apples. Dark cherry and sherry notes hit my palate right away, followed by dark chocolate and just a whisper of peat. My initial sip is predominantly phenolic peat. Adding a drop of water enhances the honey notes. With the water added, it's much of the same for me. More water brings out the aroma of the malt mash you'd experience on a distillery tour. The Hakushu offers notes of dark baked apple pie, while the Yamazaki provides the darker chocolate and sherry notes on the nose.

Aroma - The scent clearly reflects its age, with hints of leather and sawdust. The signature floral honey notes of Hibiki are still present, alongside overripe pears and ripe plums. Flavor - Exhibits a light spice and oaky fruitiness. It has a slightly musty quality reminiscent of patiently aged wood, with brown sugar and cinnamon-roasted pear and apple skin flavors. Finish - A lingering sweet and bitter oakiness. Faint notes of dark amber, aged apple cider, and a touch of sweet-and-sour muscat. Rating - 91/100

The nose is floral with prominent cherry blossoms and sweetness. It's one of the best whiskies for aroma, standing out significantly compared to Hibiki 21. Leather and raisins are also present. Taste: exceptionally smooth. Spicy. Slightly less sweet than the aroma suggests. Hints of apple and oak emerge towards the finish. Fig jam is also detected. Finish: exceptionally long-lasting.

Exceptionally smooth, with floral notes on the palate and a rich, candied, slightly smoky finish. Unquestionably the finest Japanese whisky I've encountered (and I don't typically favor spirits in this category)!
