Habitation Velier Last Ward 2009

This aged rum comes from Frank Ward and was triple distilled at Mount Gay for the now-acquired brand Mount Gilboa. Habitation Velier rums are quite scarce where I reside, so I always try to grab a bottle when I can. Rum was my initial spirit interest, largely due to the availability of quality rum at a low price. I'd argue this bottle would cost three times as much if it were scotch or bourbon. Mount Gay rums are typically aged and blended, making a pot still rum a rarity. I usually drink spirits neat, but this high ABV rum might benefit from a little water if you're not accustomed to the proof. If you drink it neat without water, I suggest letting it rest for at least 15 minutes, ideally 30. On the nose, caramel and vanilla are prominent, along with bread-like notes. I was surprised by the lack of heat at this ABV. The palate, while warm if not allowed to rest, shifts from cherries and dried fruit to leather and oak. I even detect a subtle smokiness. The finish is exceptionally long, with hints of spice and sweetness. In summary, this is an outstanding rum. It demonstrates that aging a rum for over 20 years isn't necessary for greatness. If you can wait at least 15 minutes, you're in for a treat. The high proof might deter some who prefer a smooth, sweet rum, but this rum will reward those who accept the challenge and exercise patience. Buy it if you can find it.

Reminds me of John Dore St Lucia, with notes of cherry cough syrup and savory herbs alongside sweet oak.
