Grand Macnish Original

Nose: Very light. Butterscotch candies, woody, floral. Palate: Fudge, honey, vanilla, caramel, summer fruit (berries), butter, herbal/floral. Finish: Medium-short. Buttery, rich, sweet, and slightly floral. Woody aftertaste. First off, this is an easy-drinking dram. It's simple, sweet, caramel-like, and vanilla-flavored. It has a pleasant, smooth, and quite rich mouthfeel. There are no harsh notes, it's sweet, and it's very light and buttery. However, it's mostly one-dimensional, excessively sweet, and not complex enough to maintain interest for long. This whisky holds special meaning for me. My mother passed away last year. Before I was born, she worked for an insurance agency, and one of their clients was Grand Macnish. She often received Grand Macnish as a discount – a perk she frequently utilized! Many years after leaving the agency, this remained a regular drink for her, and she always enjoyed it. Yesterday would have been my mother's 84th birthday. I toasted her a happy birthday with this whisky last night, and I'm sure she would have loved to share a dram with me. Cheers, Mum! I miss you terribly.

A budget Blended Scotch, it's a smooth spirit with flavors that vanish rapidly, but it's suitable for cocktails. Packaged (in a peculiar bottle) at 40% ABV On the nose, it seems young. Immediately, a grain whisky scent emerges. Butter. Low-quality butter chocolate. Acetone. Open fields. The scent nearly vanishes after four minutes. Corn. After the initial taste, a faint lemon note is detectable. The palate mirrors the nose with grain notes, very smooth, vanilla, and honey. It becomes peppery. Easy to consume. The finish has a very faint smoke note. Almond-like. It's very brief and subtle. Quite easy to drink, this is young but not harsh. Unremarkable, I imagine you could taste it and then forget it. 56 out of 100.

Light color. On the nose, primarily toffee. Alcoholic, with hints of honey, wood, and almond. Then cherry. On the palate, it's spicy, woody, and toffee-flavored. Oily. It's reminiscent of Ballantine's but with more spice. Smooth finish with lots of nuttiness. Adding water greatly improves it and adds half a point.

Not much distinct flavor, mostly overpowering alcohol. However, it excels as a mixer. Still has an alcoholic presence at the end.
