Fukano Distillery Single Cask

Thanks to a friend, a long overdue review. This sample was sent some time ago, and I'm finally getting around to it. One part of me feels that having a pour of whiskey is indulgent, considering the state of the world. And especially knowing that things will likely worsen before they improve – even after the pandemic ends, we'll face massive unemployment and soaring national debt. And unlike countries where leaders acted swiftly, our leadership ignored intelligence briefings, dismissing it as a hoax – so, unlike them, we will experience some negative consequences. Another part of me anticipates some comfort, in a simple 3-5cl serving of a nice dram, once a week, after a challenging week of leading the front lines of the corporate response to the pandemic. This one is unique – it is Japanese, but it's made from rice. Not corn, wheat, or barley. It results in a lighter spirit, which can serve as a foundation for excellent finishes and aging. The nose is light, more akin to a mid-range Balvenie, with a palate that nicely balances wood influence and distillate. It's unique – and a welcome departure from the standard grain spirits.

I acquired this at Flask Fine Wines & Whisky in Studio City. It is from Cask #284. It is quite fruity and more substantial than anticipated. It possesses a creamy characteristic that balances the fruit's sweetness, resulting in good harmony. It's akin to liquid fruitcake. It is somewhat lacking on the finish, and more woody notes would have enhanced it, but overall, it is a delightful drink!

Beautiful, Rich with an initial sweetness. Copper in color. The aftertaste has a banana, coconut finish, which sounds unusual but is actually quite delicious. Not for daily consumption, but a very pleasant change if you enjoy a unique Japanese whiskey that is extremely smooth.

Aged 10 years. The scent is very sweet. The taste is sweet and oily. I would not purchase this again.

Very approachable, with a mild sweetness and slight burn, which is surprising for a single barrel.

Delightful with notes of grain and orchard fruit.
