I recall visiting my grandfather’s huge farm in northern India as a child. A bungalow stood in the center, where meals were prepared outside over a cast iron “tawa” (a large concave cast iron griddle). The caretaker would smoke eggplant over this griddle, which was already marinated in spices. He would then dip this smoked spiced eggplant into a yogurt sauce containing mint and cumin. The result was incredible…lightly smoked, savory, with a minty twist. This whiskey reminded me of that. There’s a hint of smoke on the nose, followed by a savory palate…some campfire smoke, mint, and spices. A little fruit (berries?) also appears, perfectly balancing the savory side. I don’t believe I’ve had one from this distillery before, but this is simply amazing. At about $60 for a 375ml, it’s not exactly cheap, but I’d happily purchase it again. Do yourself a favor…buy it if you see it. Superbly well made. My friends, this might be a surprise hit in that selection I sent over.

About this bottle
This special bottling marks the inaugural release in Frey Ranch's Smoked Grain Series. Consistent with all Frey Ranch whiskeys, the 100% barley grains were cultivated, harvested, milled, and distilled on the Frey Ranch Farm. Furthermore, the grains were smoked using a smoker constructed by co-founder and farmer Colby Frey alongside Master Distiller Russell Wedlake, with Colby preparing his own peat from decomposed plant matter found on the farm. The suggested retail price is $59 for a 375ml bottle.
