Freeland Spirits Bourbon

I finally had the chance to try this this evening while some friends were opening special bottles. Instead, I decided to sample this from a representative. I was somewhat taken aback by the alcohol content. 46% ABV, Batch 002, bottle 550. That's the technical information. The aroma was pleasing, with bright and lightly toasted semi-melted caramel. The taste was more potent than I expected. I was hit with something like non-alcoholic dark cherry consommé mixed with moderate cinnamon spice. The mouthfeel was intense, but not in a good way. Due to the fairly low alcohol content, this Bourbon felt quite out of balance. I know everyone has opinions, and perhaps my palate is accustomed to bourbons from major distillers in the Midwest, but I still believe if this Bourbon were closer to 99 proof, it would have been more enjoyable. I detected flavor but not much burn. It's unfortunate, but I anticipate Freeland might create a barrel-proof version in the future. I will certainly look forward to that. Cheers!

I received Batch N.7. The aroma is of lemongrass and very spicy. It has a grassy taste along with caramel, walnuts and some baking spices for the finish. For 46% ABV it's remarkably spicy, quite harsh. This is one to be served on the rocks or allowed to rest in the glass for a while. It's fairly similar to a Rittenhouse, but with more caramel and nuttiness. I'd suggest waiting a few years for Freeland to improve their bourbon for the price; for now, stick with their gins.

This has a moderate body with some nuttiness and a little fruit. There's a caramel sweetness that almost seems artificial. The overall profile is somewhat blended together. It's acceptable, but not very complex or bold. It's quite bland. I'm considering a score between 11 and 13. I'll settle on a 12.

The nose isn't particularly engaging, but the taste is better. It doesn't have as much fruit/wine character as I anticipated, but it's smooth and sweet without being overpowering or excessively rich. Adding a splash of water brings out more fruit notes. It's very gentle, tastes like it's wheated. Batch 19.

A very dark aroma, with spice and chocolate. The flavor mirrors this, being smooth and complex. It's great to find a bourbon with such prominent chocolate notes. The richness complements the flavors beautifully; a fantastic bourbon.

Brown sugar is prominent on the nose, with some molasses too. Lots of flavor! Sugary, baking spices, and the finish really hangs around. The best Pacific Northwest bourbon I've encountered.
