Fichera, Fuoco Dell' Etna

From Comm. Alfio Fichera Distillery, situated on the flanks of the active volcano Mt Etna in Sicily, Italy. This facility crafts (among other products) Fuoco dell' Etna, meaning "Fire of Etna." It is composed of alcohol, water, sugar, natural flavorings, and the coloring agents E121 and E124. Bottled at 70% ABV with a vibrant red, lava-like appearance, it is offered to visitors of Mt Etna National Park, marketed as a spicy botanical tonic for any ailment. Alternatively, perhaps consuming too much of it is what causes the ailments. A 30ml miniature bottle was purchased for 3 Euros. Sampled neat. The aroma presents as sweet cherry syrup with a subtle botanical citrus undertone. The taste delivers a wave of fruit syrup sweetness alongside a potent ethanol presence. A bold herbal sensation is present, followed by notes of anise, mint, thyme, cinnamon, cherry, and citrus. The texture is dense, sweet, and coats the palate. The finish echoes these flavors, with the herbal tingle persisting alongside a long-lasting sweet and sour medicinal taste. Adding an ice cube reduces the viscosity and density of the liquid but does not diminish the sweet, herbal, and ethanol characteristics. It's understandable why they promote this as a cure for sickness; the cherry syrup color and taste, combined with the alcohol level, are reminiscent of chugging Robitussin directly from the bottle. While it doesn't numb the mouth in the same way, the similarities are striking. A few servings might make you feel improved, if not entirely well. Truly, "Fire of Etna." Best wishes.
