Famous Grouse Winter Reserve

Nose: Honey, stale white bread, some tree fruit, and then that characteristic earthy, mineral quality present in every expression of The Grouse. Caramel, perhaps a touch of cinnamon (or cooked ginger?), and a faint oceanic salinity on a secondary level. Palate: Sticky toffee pudding and bread pudding, milk chocolate, salted caramel. Hidden within the chocolate are various fruit flavors, reminiscent of chocolate-covered fruits: orange zest, cherries, cranberries, and a hint of raspberry. The finish is smooth and soft, primarily more chocolate, but a spice develops on the tip and sides of the tongue over time. The spice is akin to cinnamon or even chili heat - the bottle's label strongly suggests gingerbread spice... Possibly, but it feels slightly too intense and also lacks the ginger flavor (it might be in the nose, but it's definitely not on the palate). It's more akin to a Mexican hot chocolate. The mouthfeel is exceptionally luxurious - hitting the perfect balance of richness, weight, and creaminess - neither too much nor too little of any of these attributes. As a winter blend, this would be quite fitting enjoyed by a gas fireplace on those unseasonably mild 60-degree January evenings we experience here in Los Angeles. Sarcasm aside, I would prefer more spice in a dram I intended to drink in cold weather, but this is smooth, rich, silky, tasty, and inexpensive. It's hard to expect more. Regardless of season, this is my favorite version of The Grouse to date. It's rich and full of flavor, especially considering its price point below $30. I will likely purchase another and save it for the gas fireplace in a few months. Additional note: Excellent label design! The white grouse in the foreground with the snow-capped mountain backdrop that becomes visible as you finish the bottle... I loved it.

Effortless and smooth to drink. Flavors of sherry, citrus, cinnamon, clove, and ginger are present. Represents good value.

A pleasant mix of fruit and spice. It's quite approachable and has a satisfying conclusion. There's a hint of grapefruit in it.
