Nose: The aroma is somewhat reserved, seeming to hold back even with vigorous swirling. It offers red fruit with an unusual cherry cola-like effervescence, along with a touch of citrus and oak. There's a definite ethanol presence, more than expected (or desired) at 80 proof. Hints of caramel and perhaps a dash of chocolate are present. At times, it smells more like a whiskey than an Armagnac. Palate: Chocolate and lemon appear upon entry, followed by notes of black licorice, possibly from ex-bourbon barrels. Subdued cherry notes are present with a slight cough syrup bite. It's very dry. Inhaling reveals some earthiness and chalky mineral notes. Similar to the nose, it feels like it's holding back or, worse, lacking something. The finish is short with a hint of heat and a lingering citrus note accompanied by some bitterness. I purchased this on impulse while looking to explore Armagnac. While I've had some brandy before, I can't recall having Armagnac. This seemed like an accessible entry point with at least a few years of age. I'm not particularly impressed. The fundamental profile—dry cherry with herbal/licorice notes—could be interesting, but it really needs more to make it stand out. There's simply not much substance. It's drinkable, but essentially forgettable.
