Drego Azul Silver

The nose presents fruity and vegetal notes, including squash, apple, and pear. It has a slight sweetness, yet remains fruity and intriguing. The palate initially delivers a substantial, mellow presence of minerality, alcohol, some pleasant subtle pear, a hint of caramel, and possibly a touch of baking spices. It seems to aim for the profile of San Matias Blanco but falls short. It's quite sweet with little subtlety. A peculiar, artificial-tasting bitterness also lingers throughout the palate. While Jose Cuervo faces criticism for its shortcomings, this drink warrants even more. That bitter squash flavor is unpleasant and difficult to endure. Although fleeting moments hint at complexity, for the most part, this is simply challenging to drink (though its sweetness might make it suitable for mixing). The aroma contains notes of tobacco, vegetation, and tropical fruit, perhaps resembling a mix of Sauza Blue and Cabeza Blanco. The palate is not entirely bad. Tobacco is plentiful, and the fruity flavors do come through. However, the minerality and astringency can be excessive. Despite this, the balance is surprisingly decent. It lacks the creaminess, spice, and balanced subtlety of Cabeza Blanco. In comparison, the aroma here has a certain impact, and the palate carries an excessive flavor of cheap scotch mingled with lighter fluid. It is markedly inferior to Cabeza Blanco, though not a complete failure. When compared to Sauza Blue, the aroma has a sharper tobacco note, and the palate has less citrus and tropical fruit flavor. Sauza offers a more numbing clove sensation than the tobacco found here. This is diluted relative to others, with more lighter fluid notes. The depth and balance are significantly lacking. It could likely serve as a mixer, but it's not at all enjoyable on its own. There's something slightly odd about it, but the sweet fruit does help to redeem it somewhat. That cheap scotch flavor isn't the worst thing imaginable, as a small element of it is somewhat enjoyable, but it clearly indicates a low-quality spirit.

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo. The aromas are unusual. Perhaps it's sour agave, but it's definitely something sour. It reminds me of stewed vegetables left out for a day. The initial taste on the tongue is immediately hot. Then, that same vegetable aroma comes through as a flavor. It's sour and unpleasant. More heat follows. A harsh burn that fortunately doesn't linger. However, a chemical aftertaste remains. I'd probably only use this to disinfect a wound if I were shot off a horse in the Mexican desert.

It's inexpensive and suitable only for mixing in strongly flavored cocktails.
