Dogfish Head Punkin Liqueur

During a recent trip to Rehoboth Beach, I visited the Dogfish Head shop for exclusive beers and found this Punkin Liqueur. Initially, I dismissed it, thinking it was just another over-sweetened pumpkin item meant to contribute to American obesity; however, my curiosity led me to read the label. It revealed that it wasn't merely a hyper-sweetened pumpkin-infused vodka or gin, but was crafted by distilling their Punkin Ale and then aging it in their own used rum barrels, bottled at 30% ABV. This information swayed my opinion, as I enjoy their Punkin Ale and found the concept intriguing enough to purchase and try. The aroma leads with a burst of cloves, ginger, and sage, followed by a subtly sweet pumpkin pie filling and tropical fruits. It then shifts to toasted marshmallow, graham cracker crust, and dark chocolate with a slight ethanol warmth. The taste presents a medium, creamy mouthfeel, beginning with a surge of sage, cloves, ginger, and allspice. This is followed by a lightly sweet pumpkin pie filling and tropical fruits, transitioning to toasted marshmallow, graham cracker crust, and dark chocolate, concluding with a mild bitter herbal spice and light ethanol burn. The finish is lengthy, featuring sage, cloves, ginger, toasted marshmallows, subtly sweet pumpkin pie filling, black pepper, and espresso. I'm impressed; it's not as sweet as anticipated. Instead, the baking spices are prominent before gradually giving way to the lightly sweetened pumpkin and tropical fruit notes, complemented by mild earthy oak undertones that linger for several minutes after each sip. At $30 for a 375ml bottle, this was a worthwhile purchase that I would gladly buy again. It's like a grown-up, spicy pumpkin pie in a glass, though it appears to be exclusive to the Rehoboth area for now. I hope this was a trial run and they plan a wider release next year, as I'd prefer a glass of this over a slice of pumpkin pie for dessert.
