Dettling Small Batch Six Grain Straight Alabama Bourbon

This spirit, which I question calling bourbon, is among the worst-tasting whiskies I've ever experienced. The flavor is incredibly harsh and it seems young based on its age statement. I reside in Alabama, where it's warm for most of the year, meaning the whiskey doesn't undergo the extreme temperature fluctuations between winter and summer that contribute to complex whiskey flavors. I'm not one to criticize without reason, but this product is undeniably poor, and don't believe any of the supposed acclaim, as this remains on the shelves at local state stores here in Mobile, Alabama because genuine whiskey enthusiasts avoid it.

I acquired this in Tuscaloosa when I successfully defended my dissertation at UA. It tastes a bit young, but sweet. The finish is somewhat intense for the proof, but overall, I'm not unhappy with this purchase. I would buy it again if I were in Alabama, but I likely wouldn't go out of my way to find it elsewhere.

It boasts a rather impressive mash bill made from six grains. It leans a bit towards rye and is less sweet than typical bourbons. However, at 80 proof, it's too diluted and lacks character. In the future, I'll opt for the 94 proof Select, the bottled-in-bond version, or ideally the cask strength (which I've heard is exceptional).

This has received some harsh critiques, and honestly, I'm not sure why. While it is the youngest and least complex in the Big Escambia range, it's definitely not a failure. It has a pleasant cedar and candy aroma, with vanilla and sweet corn on the palate.

A very aromatic bourbon; the floral notes mask some of the sweeter tastes. It has a pleasant and inviting scent of honeysuckle on the nose. It's warm in the mouth, with notes of honeysuckle, herbs, and tobacco. It finishes smoothly with a medium length.

I like a bourbon that doesn't overdo the corn. This one does and has a cool cedar funkiness. Keep it up and God Bless Dixie (the modern version, not the past)!
