Darroze, a family-owned business in the Bas-Armagnac region, is renowned for its extensive collection of armagnac. These French houses, known as négociants, acquire and age spirits and wines from smaller producers before marketing them under their own brands. They frequently combine spirits from various vineyards, as seen in the "Les Grands Assemblages" (meaning "the great blends") range from Darroze. The 12-year-old bottling is the next tier up from the 8-year-old, featuring a blend of spirits from multiple local vintners. The age stated on the bottle indicates the youngest spirit included in the blend. It is bottled at 43% ABV.

Actually, I opened a bottle (to share) of Francis Darroze Bas-Armagnac, distilled in 1966 and left unsealed until 2019. It was 49.5% ABV. Domaine de Saint-Aubin Le Houga (Yers) is also on the label. A friend who enjoys cognac also tasted it and found it excellent. For me, the palate was initially spicy; perhaps a slight grape finish, but I had to search for it beyond the warmth on my tongue.

It offers an aromatic beginning with notes of tree fruit and cooked fruits, wood, herbs, and spices; a rich and spicy development introduces cinnamon, licorice, beer, grape, and biscuit; culminating in a tannic and leathery finish of moderate length with hints of oak and caramel.
