Cumberland Falls small batch

In a clear effort to capitalize on the current popularity of bourbon, the Ukrainian-based international alcohol company Global Spirits partnered with Owensboro Distilling Company (Green River Distilling) in 2020 to create yet another "authentic" bourbon. The company's "pursuit of the finest whiskey" introduces an 86-proof, four-year age-stated spirit to an already saturated bourbon market, priced between forty and fifty dollars. Aiming to "share with everyone who values heritage, respects spirits, and appreciates the most authentic bourbons," Cumberland is another example of the very capable, perfectly acceptable distillate that Owensboro continues to produce for various "brands" under its name. A relevant question when considering purchasing Cumberland Falls is whether the age-stated Cumberland justifies the extra cost, given that the 100 proof, 2-4 year-aged, Owensboro-produced Wheel Horse (recognized as Whiskey Advocate's #19 Whiskey of the Year in 2021), remains widely available for $29.99. While Wheel Horse seems to be trying too hard to overtly signal that it's bourbon, Cumberland's lower proof offers a relatively smooth aroma, a strawberry-balsamic note found deep in the flavor profile, and a pleasing enough sip that encourages further exploration beyond its fleeting, disappearing finish. Considering the current conflict impacting Ukraine, credit is due to Yevgeny Chernyak, Global's CEO, for personally sampling and approving a first batch of Cumberland that demonstrates how skilled Owensboro Distillery is at crafting America's native spirit. When tasted blind against Wheel Horse and Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel, the Cumberland Falls was the spirit that stood out as the most appealing.
